It’s not what a copywriter. It’s what he whispers.
People who know me often joke that I get paid for ‘pushing words about a bit’. But copywriting involves much more than polished prose, a string of buzzwords, a catchy headline or a clever turn of phrase. Natural talent is a bonus, but there’s no substitute for the knowledge and judgement that comes with years of experience, success and the occasional catastrophe. For almost 30 years, I’ve written copy that builds brands, influences culture and makes a lasting impression across every medium and platform.
The product of a conventionally dull middle-class childhood in 70s south London and a grisly public school education, I’ve been copywriting since the days when being sick meant feeling unwell and a tablet was something you took for a headache. After studying journalism, I joined the sports desk at The News of the World. Two years of watching goalless draws on cold, rainy Monday nights began to take their toll. So, I moved to The Mirror, as music correspondent, meeting some of the biggest names in rock and pop, before joining Central Government communications, writing speeches for Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Looking for a better work-life balance, I swapped London for country air and became a freelance copywriter. Since then, I’ve spent over 25 years helping some of the world’s most recognisable brands and businesses define and develop their messages across print and digital. My copy has mobilised emergency relief, driven car sales, filled holiday resorts, soothed troubled minds, sold widgets by the million, inspired the next generation of engineers, guided patients through life-changing diagnoses, demystified complex science and sparked children’s imaginations.
As a professional freelance copywriter, I can be called in at any stage of the creative process – brainstorming concepts, writing from scratch, or providing quick copy to meet a pressing deadline. I am a member of the creative communities at 26 and ProCopywriters, a creative cohort of Blurred, the global strategy and creative advisory firm, and We First, the global branding agency, and the preferred copywriter for a several UK creative agencies. As well as a professional copywriter, I’m a published author, speechwriter, and an occasional contributor to several magazines and blogs.

WHO I’VE WRITTEN FOR
From household names to those perhaps not so familiar, my words have helped businesses and brands communicate for over 25 years. While most people will never have heard of me, they’ll certainly have read my words, used some of my client’s services or bought one of their products. These are just a few of the businesses and brands that have trusted me with their words.
